The camp is ideally situated in shade of an acacia forest, only 5 minutes from the entrance of Lake Manyara National Park. This is the ideal base camp to discover the beautiful surroundings of Lake Manyara, or pay a cultural visit to the colourful town of Mto Wa Mbu.
The camp is set in 35 acres of acacia forest and consists of 21 permanent tents on raised platforms, all with en-suite bathrooms and a private veranda overlooking the lush forest. All the tents are discretely placed around a central glade, offering shade and privacy, but still only a short walk to the restaurant and bar.
At Migunga we offer a range of activities such as mountain biking around Lake Manyara, a cultural tour around Mto Wa Mbu, or a walking tour. There is also a birding trail around the lodge for bird enthousiasts.
You will be picked from Migunga to go for a game drive in Lake Manyara National Park is a protected area in Tanzania's Arusha and Manyara Regions, situated between Lake Manyara and the Great Rift Valley.
Apart from a spectacular setting, the park is famous for housing vast flocks of flamingos, its unusual tree-climbing lions and the vast elephant herds it was established to protect. Lunchbox will be provided for. After the gamedrive you will go back to Migunga Tented Camp.
After breakfast and a relaxing morning, we depart with packed lunch boxes towards Lake Natron. On the way we will visit a Maasai Boma (village).
Lake Natron is located about 3.5 hours’ drive away from Mto Wa Mbu, and is a surreal destination and unique natural spectacle. Its waters are highly alkaline and are unusually shallow, averaging just one meter in depth.
Wild and remote Lake Natron lies in the northeast of Tanzania in between the Ngorongoro Highlands and Serengeti plains. Here it is the landscape rather than the animals that is the attraction – the area around the lake inhabited by Maasai is dry, desolate and hauntingly beautiful.
Situated at the base of Africa’s only active volcano Oldonyo Lengai (Mountain of God), Lake Natron is one of the most alkaline lakes in the world. The lake is home to millions of tiny crustaceans, attracting literally thousands of lesser flamingo’s and it is therefore one of the most important flamingo breeding grounds on earth.
Unique in its setting, Lake Natron Tented Camp is set back in a grove of trees adjacent to the shores of the lake. Basic but clean safari tents offer showers, comfortable beds and a private veranda. A fully stocked bar and candle lit restaurant ensure you have a cold drink and delicious food at the end of an arduous climb or long days walking.
After checking into your lodge and a short break, go for a short walk along the lake shore looking out for flamingos. Lake Natron is the most important and regular breeding site for lesser flamingos in East Africa hosting up to 2 million of them during the breeding season
After breakfast, you go for a walk to the village or to the waterfalls. You can take a quick dip and enjoy the fresh water while swimming. It is the perfect way to cool down after the walk. The waterfall has wild palms growing above the gorge and if you go under the waterfall itself you find a semi tunnel that leads to the back where you can easily have a swim. You spend the whole day here with the guide who will show and provide all information about this unique place. You can also walk back for a late lunch and a leisure afternoon at the camp.
Lake Natron offers several activities for those who want to do more than stretch their legs. It is possible to organize a volcano hike on the Oldonyo Lengai, where you can experience a hike on an active volcano – and maybe even spot some lava! This hike is not for the faint hearted. Starting at 11pm, the hike will take about 12 hours throughout the night. But definitely worth your while.
In addition, as a starting point, Lake Natron offers multiple hikes. You can choose to do a camping trek from Lake Natron to the rim of the Ngorongoro Crater, or a longer waterfall hike for around 6 hours. Together with our local guides, we can create a unique program according to your preferences. Much is possible!
After your game drive in the central Serengeti National Park, your driver will transfer you to Ikoma Tented Camp for dinner and overnight.
Set in the midst of an incredible scenery of savannah and skies, you find Ikoma Tented Camp, sheltered in a grove of acacia trees. Ikoma has 35 traditional Meru tents, each under thatch with a private veranda overlooking the impressive plains of the Serengeti. The central restaurant and bar area boast a large camp fire – an ideal spot to unwind with a chilled drink after a long days of exciting game viewing. Ikoma Tented Camp is ideally situated at the border of the world-renowned Serengeti National Park, along the path of the migrating wildebeests between Kenya and Tanzania.
From Ikoma you can enter the western corridor of the park, taking in Kirawira and the Grumeti river – home to the giant wildebeesteating crocodiles. There is no better place to enjoy one of the world’s greatest wildlife spectacles.
At Ikoma, we also offer a walking safari. This is unique at Ikoma as the camp is set right outside the parks official boundaries, setting it apart from camps within the national park who cannot offer a walking safari. In addition, it is possible to do a night game drive and spot the nocturnal animals you cannot see during the day.
Following breakfast, depart to Serengeti Park. Serengeti is one of the places to spot large predators like lions, leopards, cheetahs, and hyenas in Seronera Valley. You can also see elephants, zebras, elephants, giraffes, wildebeests, and many other species on any given day.
This day go on a full day of game drive in the Serengeti, one of Africa's best national parks. The Serengeti has a lot to offer, including superb game drives, stunning sunsets, and a large number of animals that may be seen in a single day. This ofcourse the migration of the wildebeest. In June and July the wildebeest will go from the central part to the Northern part of Serengeti, which is not so far from Ikoma Tented Camp. The wildebeest are usually in the central Serengeti and getting ready for the toughest part of their odyssey. The herds may have split up, with some already crossing the Grumeti River. The Great Migration have reached the Grumeti region and northern parts of the Serengeti and are peering closely at the treacherous waters of the Mara River.
After a full day of safari, you will return to Ikoma Tented Camp where you can swap your best stories at the campfire and have a relaxing 4-course meal before a good nights rest amongst the sounds of wildlife.
Another whole day game drive and an overnight at Ikoma Tented Camp.
Soon after breakfast, an early depart from Ikoma to Ngorongoro Crater. After registration drive into the crater rim where you will reach to the descending gate. The crater is over 20 kilometers wide and approximately 600 meters deep. Ngorongoro Crater is famous for the presence of the Big Five buffalos, black rhinos, elephants, lions, and leopards.
It also contains many other animals, such as cheetahs, zebras, hippos, serval cats, hyenas, and wildebeest. Late evening drive to Crater Forest Tented Camp.
Crater Forest is a small tented camp located on a highland coffee plantation at an altitude of 1800 m, directly bordering the Ngorongoro Crater Conservation Area (NCAA). The camp is a 10 kilometer drive away from the main road leading from Karatu town to the famous Ngorongoro Crater, offering you some nice views of the surrounding hills and coffee plantations.
Crater Forest Tented Camp is operated as a small scale eco-friendly camp with only 15 spacious tented rooms, with en-suite bathrooms with a hot shower and flush toilet. There is even an African-style fire pot in every room, to keep warm at night during the chilly African winter times. The rooms are all set on highly raised platforms offering some magnificent views over the Ngorongoro Forest. From your veranda you can enjoy romantic sundowners or watch wildlife, like elephants, roaming through the dense forest.
In the morning you will wake up to the sounds of the awakening forest, when the nocturnal wildlife makes way for a mistily rising
sunlight. Rise and shine for a new day in the middle of nature…
At Crater Forest we offer a jungle hike in the Ngorongoro forest, or a coffee tour around the coffee plantation in which the camp is placed.
